NCC Directs Mobile Network Operators to Audit Billing Systems Amid Data Depletion Concerns
The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive instructing Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to conduct independent audits of their billing systems to address the growing worries among subscribers regarding data depletion.
In a statement signed by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, on Thursday, the commission emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in data usage and billing practices.
Additionally, the NCC is working towards simplifying tariff plans to enhance transparency within the telecommunications sector. This initiative aims to provide consumers with clearer pricing options, enabling them to make informed decisions about their network preferences and service selections.
The statement highlighted the commission’s advocacy for designating telecom infrastructure as critical national infrastructure to prioritize its protection and development, ensuring its resilience and reliability in serving the nation’s needs.
Furthermore, the NCC unveiled ambitious targets aimed at significantly improving the quality of services (QoS) in the telecommunications realm. These targets align with the directives set forth by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, under his Strategic Agenda 2023.
Key objectives include elevating Nigeria’s broadband penetration rate to 70% by the end of 2025, delivering robust data download speeds in both urban and rural areas, extending coverage to at least 80% of the country’s populace by the end of 2026, and reducing the percentage of unconnected Nigerians in rural regions.
Moreover, the NCC aims to facilitate a significant increase in broadband investment, targeting a growth rate ranging from 300% to 500% by the end of 2027.
