The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. This was revealed in a statement by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, on Wednesday.
The new allowance will be backdated to July 2024, as indicated in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta. This increase follows the recent approval of a new ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers by President Bola Tinubu.
Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, Director General of the NYSC, expressed gratitude to the government for its dedication to the welfare of corps members. He noted that the increase would boost their morale and motivate them in their national service.
The statement reads: “The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024. This aligns with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, as outlined in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission dated 25th September 2024, signed by Chairman Mr. Ekpo Nta.”
Prior to this, Brigadier-General Ahmed had advocated for improved welfare for corps members during a visit to the Commission’s Chairman. He expressed confidence that the increase will provide relief and enhance corps members’ dedication to their service.
