Cross River State Urges FG to Repair Calabar-Uyo Highway
The Cross River State government is urging the federal government to speed up reconstruction work on the Calabar-Uyo federal highway, which has been in disrepair for nearly a decade. Commissioner for Commerce Abigail Duke Orok made this appeal during a visit to the Federal Controller of Works in Calabar.
The deplorable condition of this highway, which connects Calabar to Akwa Ibom and other eastern states, has increased travel time from one hour to five hours. This has raised concerns among business operators, impacted goods and services movement, and hiked transportation costs.
To address these issues and boost participation in the upcoming International Trade Fair in November and Carnival Calabar in December, the state government seeks federal intervention. Specifically, they’re asking for palliative work on key access roads, including:
– Calabar-Uyo Highway: A critical route connecting Cross River to Akwa Ibom
– Ikom-Obudu Road: Essential for trade and commerce in the region
– Bekwarra-Vandekya Axis: A vital link to Ogoja and surrounding areas
– Akamkpa/Biase Section: A key stretch of the Calabar-Ikom axis
In response, Engr. Adebisi Osim, State Controller of Works, acknowledged the concerns and promised to relay the message to the relevant authorities. Her office is working closely with contractors to ensure speedy completion of the projects.
