Floods Claim Two Lives, Displace Residents in Borno State Communities
At least two people have died after heavy rains caused severe flooding in Gumsuri and Wovi communities, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State on Sunday.
The torrential downpour, lasting 12 to 13 hours, resulted in widespread destruction, with nearly half of residential structures either severely damaged or completely submerged. Many residents have fled to higher ground, leaving behind their homes and belongings.
A community elder in Gumsuri described the situation as critical, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention and humanitarian assistance including emergency shelter, food, and medical support.
“We are overwhelmed,” he said. “Many have lost everything. We fear more bodies may be found as search efforts continue.”
Emergency response teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage and confirming casualties.
