Nigerian Police Arrest Musician Speed Darlington (Akpi) During Show in Imo State
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has confirmed that his client, musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigerian police in Owerri, Imo State.
Adeyanju made the announcement in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, saying, “Our client Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI has been arrested by the Nigerian police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria.”
Adeyanju added that the arrest took place when Darlington was returning to Nigeria for a performance, though the reasons for the arrest remain unclear.
In related news, SaharaReporters recently reported that Darlington was detained by the police over allegations of cyberstalking fellow musician, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy. Nigeria News 247 also revealed that Speed Darlington was initially detained at the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) center in Guzape, Abuja.
Adeyanju visited Darlington while he was in detention and confirmed to SaharaReporters that he had seen a petition filed against his client by Burna Boy.
According to the reports, Darlington had been arrested in Lagos and moved between various police stations before being transferred to Abuja, where the IRT accused him of cyberstalking Burna Boy. However, Adeyanju maintained that the petition lacked sufficient grounds to justify his client’s arrest.
“I have met with Speed Darlington,” Adeyanju stated, adding that his client was in good spirits. “We are working to get him released on bail as soon as possible.”
A police ACP investigating the case told Adeyanju that the police could not provide a copy of the petition, but allowed the lawyer to read and review its content.
