ACF Denounces Violence and Looting in #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria Protests
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has strongly condemned the violence, looting, and destruction of public and private property during the recent #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests. Reports from NIGERIA NEWS 247 indicate that in northern states like Kaduna and Kano, protesters marched through major city streets, some even waving Russian flags.
The unrest led to the destruction of lives and property, prompting state governments to impose 24-hour curfews in various regions. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, on Wednesday in Kaduna, the ACF expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained during the nationwide protests.
The forum described the actions of the protesters as “inexcusable and unequivocally condemnable,” emphasizing that these actions undermined the stated reasons behind the protests.
Leading up to the planned 10-day national protest in August 2024, the ACF had raised concerns about the potential for chaos, warning of the possibility of a breakdown in law and order. The forum noted that the behavior displayed during the poorly organized event far exceeded reasonable limits and contradicted even the vague justifications provided by the protest’s organizers.
The ACF also condemned the looting, arson, vandalism, and general lawlessness, as well as the inexplicable display of Russian flags, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
The forum expressed deep concern over the growing discontent and frustration among Nigerians with the government’s public policy planning and implementation, especially over the past 14 months. They urged the Federal and state governments to engage with citizens and address their grievances through immediate consultations on current public policy directions.
Additionally, the ACF recommended the reinforcement of accountability and good governance principles, a robust anti-corruption drive, and dynamic public policy engagement between citizens and the government.
As Nigeria counts the heavy toll of the protests, the ACF extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, commiserated with the injured, and sympathized with those whose properties were looted or damaged.
