Economic Hardship: NLC, Student Unions Oppose Planned Mass Protest
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), student unions, and other civil society organizations have withdrawn from the planned mass protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.
The leaders of the unions’ Jigawa State chapters announced this during town hall meetings held on Monday at the Banquet Hall, Government House Dutse. The meetings aimed to discuss collaboration with key stakeholders to address economic challenges and advise people against becoming agents of national disruption.
According to the unions, the state government is actively working to alleviate the suffering of the common man, making the planned mass protest unnecessary in Jigawa State. They highlighted various empowerment programs initiated by the state government, such as FADAMA CARES, which employ a scientific and unbiased method of selecting beneficiaries, ensuring that thousands of poor and vulnerable people benefit directly.
They also noted that the government is employing youth, increasing scholarships for students, and ensuring the timely payment of salaries and other benefits.
State Commissioner of Police, CP A.T. Abdullahi, emphasized that Jigawa is the most peaceful state in the nation, and there is a need to maintain this peace. He explained that most protests are often hijacked by criminals with harmful intentions.
“The process will be taken over by undesirable elements, leading to a crisis,” the CP said. He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting the lives and properties of the citizens.
