EFCC Reacts to Alleged Naira Abuse at Senator Goje’s Daughter’s Wedding
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to a viral video showing the nation’s currency, the Naira, being sprayed freely at a wedding ceremony in Kano, Kano State, on Friday, October 24, 2024.
The video led to widespread allegations that Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje, was responsible for the abuse of the Naira. These claims were widely circulated by Nigerians, including an editorial in a leading national newspaper.
As the nation’s foremost anti-corruption agency, committed to combating currency mutilation and the dollarization of the economy, the EFCC immediately initiated an investigation. After analyzing the video, it was determined that while the alleged abuse of the Naira did indeed occur, it did not take place at Mrs. Goje’s wedding but rather at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah on the same date.
Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with offices in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai, UAE.
Haruna has confirmed the incident, acknowledging that the Naira abuse occurred at her daughter’s wedding dinner on October 24, 2024. The groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, hails from Niger Republic, and it was members of his family who were responsible for spraying Naira notes and dollar bills during the event.
In response to this, the EFCC has invited the Nigerien groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, to appear at its national headquarters in Abuja, along with those who were involved in spraying the currency at the wedding.
While the EFCC appreciates the growing awareness and vigilance among Nigerians regarding currency abuse, it has made it clear that it will not take action against individuals falsely accused of crimes. The Commission remains resolute in its fight against Naira abuse and will take appropriate action against any offender, regardless of their status or position.
