Donald Nwaneri, a social crusader and rights activist, has expressed concern over the ongoing detention of numerous #EndBadGovernance protesters without trial in the country.
Â
In an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, Nwaneri urged the president to order the immediate and unconditional release of the detainees. He highlighted the case of Chukwudi Opara, an Abuja-based businessman, and over 1,400 others who have been held in police custody for over a month due to their involvement in the protests. He called on the president to show compassion.
Â
Nwaneri also pointed out that Chukwudi’s wife, Mrs. Eucharia Obianuju Opara, a nursing mother and fashion designer, has faced repeated harassment from security forces. Her shop was raided over accusations that it produced Russian flags used by protesters.
Â
The Imo-based activist further lamented that, in addition to British national Andrew Martin Wynne, several Nigerians, including Lucky Ehis Obiyan, Obiajunwa Nnaemeka Peter, Nwachukwu Justin Ikedi, and Abdullahi Musa, are now on a police watchlist for alleged treason.
Â
He added that Mrs. Opara, who recently gave birth, has been forced to flee her home and business due to ongoing raids by police, who claim her shop manufactured the flags used in protests in Northern Nigeria.
Â
Nwaneri recalled that only 10 of the detainees, including Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye (a.k.a Lenin), Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi (a.k.a Yomi), Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simeon, and Angel Love Innocent (the only woman among them), have been arraigned before a High Court in Abuja, while the others remain in detention.
