The Presidency has issued a strong rebuke of The Guardian newspaper for its recent editorial advocating for military intervention in Nigeria, a sentiment articulated by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

In a press release shared via his X account, Onanuga expressed deep concern over the publication’s lead story from October 25, 2024, titled “Calls for military intervention: misery, harsh policies driving Nigerians to desperate choices.”

He accused the newspaper of inciting unrest and promoting regime change under the guise of responsible journalism. The statement underscored the administration’s belief that such inflammatory content, including the accompanying illustration and tone of the article, strays far from the principles of ethical reporting and undermines public trust in the media.

Onanuga pointed out that while The Guardian ostensibly condemns military rule, it paradoxically fuels the discourse surrounding military intervention. He highlighted the article’s portrayal of the current political climate, where disillusioned citizens, disheartened by economic hardship and perceived governmental failures, are driven to extreme measures.

The administration argued that the newspaper’s narrative lacks balance and fails to recognize the progress made in Nigeria’s economy, noting that it is dangerous to provoke public sentiment that could empower those seeking to disrupt the nation’s democratic processes.

This lack of responsible reporting not only misrepresents the administration’s efforts but also risks undermining the stability that Nigerians have fought hard to achieve.

Furthermore, the press release emphasized the necessity for media outlets to adhere to standards of responsible journalism, particularly during challenging political and economic times. Onanuga reiterated President Tinubu’s calls for unity and patience, portraying these as a commitment to a better future rather than signs of weakness.

He pointed to recent positive economic indicators, including a significant decrease in the revenue-to-debt service ratio and an increase in foreign reserves, to argue that the administration is actively working towards recovery and growth.

In light of these developments, the statement called on The Guardian and other media platforms to prioritize balanced reporting that encourages constructive dialogue, rather than narratives that incite division.

The administration urged all Nigerians, alongside the media, to support the government in navigating the country through its current challenges, reinforcing the importance of solidarity in fostering a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
