On Thursday morning, youths in Sokoto State joined a nationwide protest against economic hardship and poor governance. The demonstrators, carrying various placards, rallied to voice their dissatisfaction with the high cost of living.

Abdullahi Aliyu, a protester at the state government house entrance, criticized the rising food prices and urged the federal government to reconsider its policies to alleviate the suffering of the poor.

Aliyu stated, “We have joined this protest to highlight the dire situation. Our leaders must address these issues; it’s unacceptable that while they claim to serve us, many are struggling to afford basic necessities.”

Protests in Sokoto were generally peaceful with a notable security presence. In addition to the Round Meruwa Roundabout, another group gathered at the Sultan’s palace to express their demands for policy changes.

Mallam Saidu Abubakar, a local motorist, praised the police and security forces for their effective management of the situation without violence.

In Kwara State, Ilorin saw deserted major roads and closed businesses as workers stayed home in anticipation of the protest. Despite heavy security at key government buildings and banks, many shops and offices remained shut throughout the day.
