The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) is urging President Bola Tinubu to change his approach to understanding the plight of Nigerians. Instead of driving around at night, HURIWA suggests the President should explore the country during the daytime to truly grasp the economic struggles of the people.

This advice comes after Senator Orji Uzor Kalu revealed that President Tinubu moves around the Federal Capital Territory at night to gauge the pulse of citizens.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed disappointment with the government’s inaction regarding the harsh economic conditions caused by frequent petrol price hikes. The association is pushing President Tinubu to visit various markets across the country, such as Ariaria International Market in Aba, Dugbe Market in Ibadan, and Onitsha Main Market, to see firsthand the impact of unaffordable basic commodities and unstable prices on Nigerians.

Some of President Tinubu’s policies have shaped the current economic landscape. For instance, the removal of fuel subsidies has led to a significant increase in transportation costs, with petrol prices averaging N660 per liter ¹. The government has also initiated some policy responses to address these challenges, including the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses and a ministerial performance bond to enhance accountability ¹.
