1. Southern governors on Monday advocated for state police, arguing that it would provide them with greater control over security decisions. They emphasized that locals, familiar with the terrain and language, are better suited to combat crime.

2. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu explained that his appointments of Northerners to key defense positions were due to their regional expertise in addressing insecurity. Speaking in Katsina, Tinubu acknowledged the success of his administration’s strategies against Northern security challenges but stressed the need for local support to sustain these efforts.

3. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed concern over an alleged plan by Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, highlighted this issue in a statement on Monday.

Ifunanya Miracle, a recent graduate from Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Department of Quantity Surveying, tragically lost her life while attempting to escape a prank robbery on campus in Awka, Anambra State. Her friend, Peace, from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, sustained injuries in the incident.

5. The Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced 27-year-old cleaner Saviour Udoh to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl on church premises. Justice Ramon Oshodi deemed Udoh’s actions reprehensible and deserving of the maximum legal punishment.

6. The Ogun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency reported recovering 3.33 tonnes of cannabis sativa and 10.949 kg of psychotropic substances from January to May this year. Additional seizures included 0.017 kg of cocaine, 227 liters of skuchies, 11 liters of codeine, and 0.129 kg of methamphetamine.

7. The Ogun State Police Command revealed on Monday that the case of Rahemat Lateef, a pregnant woman who claimed to have been abducted by unknown gunmen en route to a state hospital in Abeokuta, was a fabricated kidnapping. Police spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola disclosed this on her X handle.

8. Suspected bandits have killed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof. Yusuf Saidu. The DVC for Research, Innovation, and Development was killed while traveling from Sokoto to Kaduna on Monday.

9. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported 1,598 suspected cases of cholera across 107 local government areas. NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris provided this update on Monday in Abuja.

10. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun was elected Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum on Monday, with Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo as Vice Chairman. The election took place during a meeting of the Southern Governors Forum in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
