The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has praised the dedication of Edo voters for turning out in large numbers to cast their votes, despite the heavy rainfall.
Obaseki arrived at his polling unit, Ward 4, Unit 19, at Emokpae Primary School in Oredo Local Government Area, at 11:50 am. He completed his accreditation and cast his vote at about 11:57 am, after which he spoke to journalists who had been waiting for him since 7:30 am.
The governor lauded the determination of the electorate, especially the young voters, for braving the rain to exercise their right to vote in the gubernatorial election.
“You can see that despite the weather, the turnout and enthusiasm of the electorate are high. The ballot box at my polling unit is full, which clearly shows that people are interested in this election and have been adequately mobilized.
“People are very engaged in this election because it is a pivotal moment for us in Edo State. I am not surprised, as many young people are here to express themselves and fulfill their civic duties.
“So far, I am pleased with what I’ve seen, and the voting process at my unit has been smooth and efficient. I just hope that the collation process will also be peaceful and that the results won’t be tampered with.
“I am also satisfied with the military presence in the state. Federal security has taken control, and I have confidence in the Inspector General of Police, who is the chief security officer of the state.”
Commenting on arrests made by the military, Governor Obaseki praised their efforts, noting that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has followed through on his promises.
“The military has done a great job. The Chief of Defence Staff visited me and assured that his men were fully on the ground, and I’m happy with their performance. However, I am not entirely sure what the police are doing at this time.
“I have received reports of individuals claiming to be policemen at Ogbe polling field, trying to arrest voters at their polling units on election day.
“Nevertheless, we are satisfied with the deployment of our agents, and our situation room is up and running, receiving reports from across the state. We are hopeful for the best outcome.”
