Tension arose at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in the early hours of Sunday, prompting the postponement of the final collation of results for the Edo State governorship election to 11 a.m.
INEC made this announcement at its headquarters in Benin, the Edo State capital, which also serves as the final collation center.
The delay followed a four-hour meeting between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, INEC officials, and Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba, who is overseeing the election security.
Governor Obaseki visited the INEC headquarters to protest the collation process, alleging it had been compromised against his party.
During Mr. Obaseki’s meeting with the police chief and INEC officials, Dennis Idahosa, the APC deputy governorship candidate, led a separate group of protesters to the INEC headquarters, demanding that Obaseki come outside.
The National Secretary of the APC, Ajibola Basiru, also arrived at the scene, accusing Mr. Obaseki of acting like a thug.
