Hunger Protest: APC Leader Expresses Concerns for Safety of PWDs
Tolu Bankole, a member of the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee, has expressed concerns about the safety of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) ahead of the planned nationwide protest. Bankole, who oversees PWD affairs within the ruling party, issued a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
The #EndBadGovernance demonstration, scheduled to take place from August 1 to 15, has sparked tension and mixed reactions among Nigerians. Many youths have expressed interest in participating, driven by the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
Bankole urged both the protest organizers and the Federal Government to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue. He also appealed to Nigerian youths to reconsider mass action, highlighting the potential impact on physically challenged individuals who could be adversely affected by the protest.
He stated, “The risk of such demonstrations being hijacked and escalating into violence is significant. Our priority should be to engage in constructive dialogue with government officials at all levels. We must avoid a repetition of the unfortunate violence witnessed during the EndSARS movement.”
“Persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable in our society, and any violence or disruption from protests could disproportionately affect them. It is crucial that we advocate for peaceful methods of engagement to ensure their safety and well-being.”
Bankole emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has implemented several policies aimed at revitalizing the economy and improving the standard of living for all Nigerians. He called on all stakeholders to focus on meaningful dialogue and collaboration with the government rather than risking violence. “Together, we can work towards positive change while safeguarding the rights and lives of every Nigerian,” he concluded.
