The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced the rescheduling of the local government elections to October 26. This is a shift from the previously set date of November 30.

KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, made the announcement at a news conference on Friday. He explained that the decision aligns with the recent Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to local governments.

“In line with the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the mutual agreement between state and federal governments regarding local government financial autonomy, and considering the October deadline, we are compelled to reschedule the local government election to October 26, 2024,” Prof. Malumfashi stated.

He urged stakeholders to support and cooperate with the commission during this period of adjustment.

Prof. Malumfashi detailed the revised election timetable: campaign activities will run from September 1 to October 26 at midnight. Party primaries and candidate submissions are scheduled from September 3 to September 26. Form sales will begin on September 15 and end on September 26, with completed forms to be submitted from September 27 to October 8.

Candidate verification and submission of party agents’ names will take place from October 9 to October 14. The election results will be announced on October 27, and rerun elections, if needed, are set for November 9.
