Kwara PDP Ready for Local Government Elections
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has announced its preparedness for the upcoming local government elections, but has condemned any attempts to undermine the process.
In a statement issued by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the party endorsed the recent court order halting the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) from proceeding with the local government elections scheduled for September 21, 2024, until the case is resolved.
The PDP welcomed the Federal High Court’s restraining order as a victory for Kwara State residents who have been waiting for local government elections since 2019. The party accused Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of conspiring with KWSIEC to deliberately breach electoral laws, creating a potential situation where unfavorable election results could be challenged in court.
The PDP’s statement read: “The Governor’s actions, in collusion with KWSIEC, aimed to create a trap for the people. If the elections did not favor him, he could use these violations to seek a court nullification.”
The party emphasized its readiness for the elections, having already submitted the names and credentials of candidates for all 16 Local Government Area (LGA) chairmanship and 193 councilorship seats to KWSIEC. They criticized the Governor for allegedly attempting to impose his chosen candidates on local councils, reflecting a broader issue of mismanagement and corruption.
“The restraining order serves as a safeguard against attempts to undermine the democratic process and ensure that local government elections are conducted fairly,” the PDP added.
The party urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and guard against manipulations that could affect the integrity of the elections and the proper use of resources intended for local government development.
