Former Nigerian winger Emmanuel Amuneke has expressed strong support for Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, predicting him as a future contender for the CAF Player of the Year award.
Amuneke believes Lookman has the potential to follow in Victor Osimhen’s footsteps and emerge as Africa’s top footballer.
Osimhen, who claimed the award last year after playing a key role in Napoli’s historic Serie A title victory, is currently regarded as the continent’s best footballer.
Amuneke, a former Barcelona player and a past CAF Player of the Year winner himself, sees similar potential in Lookman.
At 26, Lookman was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, scoring three goals and registering an assist. He also made headlines with Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League, netting a hat-trick in the final against the previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen.
His impressive performances earned him a place on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, making him the only African player nominated this year.
Amuneke is confident that Lookman is next in line for the prestigious CAF award.
“He’s poised to be crowned CAF Player of the Year if he continues performing at this level,” Amuneke said. “I watched his last game against Rwanda, and his display was exceptional. It shows he has firmly established himself in African football.”
Reflecting on past Nigerian winners, Amuneke added: “After I won it, Ikpeba and then Kanu claimed the award. If another Nigerian wins it, it will be a great joy.”
“We must continue to support our players, whether they’re in Europe or playing in local leagues. It’s important we all contribute to the ecosystem that sustains our football.”
Lookman is expected to face tough competition for the top African footballer title, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface and Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz also in the running.
