Former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has revealed that his departure from Stamford Bridge for Atletico Madrid this summer was due to the club’s inability to offer him a long-term future.

The England international also dismissed claims that new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca didn’t believe his playing style fit the team’s possession-based tactics.

Currently on international duty with the England squad ahead of their Nations League match against Ireland, the 24-year-old told reporters:

“Chelsea made their decisions and brought in some top players on long-term contracts. That wasn’t the case for me, but it worked out well for everyone.

“I considered my options and looked at the bigger picture. The moment I knew Atletico Madrid were interested, I was excited.”

Addressing suggestions that he lacked the technical skills for Maresca’s system, Gallagher said, “I don’t think that’s true. Last season, I had a strong performance with Chelsea, as shown by Mauricio Pochettino playing me in every game and trusting me.”
