Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has criticized Raheem Sterling, suggesting the winger should take responsibility for his difficulties under new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
NIGERIA NEWS 247 reports that Maresca has seemingly overlooked Sterling since taking charge at Stamford Bridge, indicating that the player does not fit into his plans. Gallas argues that Sterling should largely blame himself for his unsuccessful stint with Chelsea.
Sterling, who joined Chelsea in 2022 for a reported €56.2 million after a successful seven-year run at Manchester City, struggled to make an impact. At Manchester City, he scored 131 goals and provided 73 assists in 339 appearances, establishing himself as a key figure. However, at Chelsea, he managed only 19 goals and 12 assists in 81 games over two seasons.
Sterling was loaned to Arsenal on deadline day this summer.
Gallas told Gambling Zone, “Sometimes players need to look at themselves when things go wrong at their club. Raheem Sterling’s situation at Chelsea arose because he didn’t perform over the past two years. He didn’t score or assist enough, and the new manager decided he wasn’t part of his plans—that’s not the manager’s fault.”
