EPL: Owen Hargreaves Predicts Manchester United Won’t Win Trophies Due to ‘Filler’ Signings
Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves has expressed doubts about Manchester United’s chances of winning trophies this season, criticizing their summer signings, including Joshua Zirkzee.
Zirkzee, who joined Manchester United from Bologna for approximately £36 million, scored the winning goal on his Premier League debut against Fulham. However, he struggled to make an impact in his first start against Liverpool last Sunday.
Hargreaves believes Zirkzee is not the solution to Manchester United’s goalscoring issues and will not deliver the 40-goal tally needed to make a significant difference. He remarked on Rio Ferdinand Presents, “While Zirkzee is a decent player, he’s not the kind of prolific striker like Erling Haaland who can score 40 goals a season. In our team, he would have been a useful squad player, but if you want to win titles, you need a top striker who is ruthless, like Ruud van Nistelrooy.”
Hargreaves further criticized United’s transfer strategy, stating, “Manchester United should only sign players who can help them win the Premier League and the Champions League. If they can’t do that, they might as well save their money. Currently, they seem to be signing a lot of players who are just fillers.”
