Manchester City avenged their FA Cup loss to Manchester United by winning the Community Shield 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The match sparked to life in the final minutes when United’s substitute Alejandro Garnacho seemed to have secured victory with a well-placed finish in the 82nd minute, following a pass from Bruno Fernandes. However, City responded in the dying moments of regular time, with Bernardo Silva heading in an equalizer from Oscar Bobb’s cross.

The game was decided in a penalty shootout, where City emerged victorious after Jonny Evans missed for United, and Manuel Akanji converted his spot-kick, preventing a second consecutive Wembley defeat to the FA Cup winners.

After the match, United manager Erik ten Hag urged his team to use the sting of this loss as motivation for the Premier League season, saying, “When the performance is right, and you lose, it hurts. You have to feel pain, and we have to take this belief into the league.”

City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his satisfaction with the result, noting, “To start the season with a title is good. We are really pleased. It’s nice to play this game because it means you won something in the previous season. Now, our focus is on the next game and trying to win it.”
