Osimhen Responds Strongly to Finidi’s Allegations of Lack of Commitment to Super Eagles
Victor Osimhen has responded strongly to comments allegedly made by former Super Eagles head coach George Finidi, which questioned his commitment to the national team.
The Napoli star missed Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic due to injury concerns. Following the team’s poor performance—resulting in a draw and a loss—Finidi, who has since resigned, reportedly questioned Osimhen’s dedication, stating he would not beg players to join the team.
Angered by these remarks, Osimhen addressed the issue in an Instagram live session, asserting that he has always given his all for the Super Eagles and had informed Finidi about his injury before the matches.
“Everyone knows I play my heart out for both club and country. I won’t allow anyone to disrespect me or tarnish my name. Whether Finidi’s comments are true or not, I will share our video conversation, pictures, and screenshots on my Instagram story because I won’t tolerate any disrespect,” said Osimhen.
The African Footballer of the Year expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’ve lost respect for him. I asked to join the Super Eagles camp to support my teammates, but he told me to stay with my family. I have a video of our conversation.”
Osimhen, who mentioned playing through injuries for the national team, questioned why the blame for Nigeria’s poor performance was being placed on his absence.
“After two bad games, everyone is blaming me,” the 25-year-old said, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the Super Eagles.
Coinciding with Osimhen’s comments, Finidi announced his resignation as Super Eagles coach, just under two months after his appointment.
“Yes, it is true. I have resigned,” Finidi confirmed to Channels Television on Saturday.
Appointed on April 29, 2024, after serving as interim coach during two friendly matches in Morocco, Finidi, 52, is a member of Nigeria’s ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and participated in the country’s debut World Cup the same year. He worked as an assistant to Coach José Santos Peseiro until the Portuguese coach resigned.
