Bashir Ahmed, former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed concern over the negative impact TikTok is having in Nigeria. He highlighted that the platform is increasingly being used by criminal elements such as bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists to spread misinformation and propaganda.

In a post on X.com, Ahmed emphasized the need for stricter regulations and content monitoring on TikTok to curb its misuse by dangerous individuals. He noted that the app’s freedom has emboldened criminals, allowing them to engage with the public and defend their illegal activities in live conversations.

He stated, “TikTok is causing more harm than good to our country, as it amplifies the voices of criminals and provides a space for them to spread their malicious agendas. Nigeria needs to take action to prevent these individuals from exploiting the platform.”

This concern comes amid reports of viral TikTok videos showing bandits flaunting ransom money. Ahmed’s comments also recall the Buhari administration’s 222-day ban on Twitter, which was lifted in January 2022 after concerns about content regulation.
