Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged on Wednesday to make Israel “regret” the “cowardly” assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

In a post on X, Pezeshkian stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will protect its territorial integrity, honor, pride, and dignity, and make the terrorist invaders regret their cowardly act.” He mourned Haniyeh, describing him as “a brave leader.”

Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran while attending the inauguration of the country’s new president.

The incident followed an Israeli attack on Tuesday on a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut, which resulted in the death of a senior commander of the Iran-backed group. Israel claimed this commander was responsible for a recent rocket attack on the Israel-annexed Golan Heights.
