A Turkish-American woman was fatally shot by Israeli forces during a protest against settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The deceased, identified as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, was struck by a gunshot to the head while participating in a demonstration near Nablus on Friday. Eygi, a U.S. citizen with Turkish heritage, was taking part in a regular protest in Beita, a region known for its tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinians.
WAFA reported that Israeli troops opened fire on the protesters, critically injuring Eygi, who was later pronounced dead at Rafidia Hospital in Nablus.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed profound sorrow over Eygi’s death, stating: “We have learned with deep regret that our citizen Aysenur Ezgi Eygi has been killed by the Israeli occupation forces.”
The U.S. State Department also confirmed her death and stated that it was seeking more information about the incident. “We are urgently gathering more details about the circumstances of her death and will provide further updates as we learn more,” said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, who described the incident as “tragic.”
The Israeli military has announced that it is investigating the incident.
