Final-Year Students burn Principal’s Home Over Missing NECO Registration After Paying ₦85,000 Each
In a shocking turn of events in Benue State, final-year students of Gyutiev Model College have reportedly set fire to their principal’s residence following allegations of fraud and negligence.
According to local sources, the students were enraged upon discovering that they had not been registered for the National Examinations Council (NECO) exam, despite paying a substantial fee of N85,000 each. The NECO exam is a critical milestone for secondary school leavers in Nigeria, and missing it can significantly derail academic and career plans.
Eyewitnesses claimed that tensions had been building among the students and their parents for weeks after suspicions arose that the school had failed to fulfill its obligation. Matters came to a head when it was confirmed that their names were not included on the NECO registration list.
Feeling betrayed and frustrated, the students reportedly took matters into their own hands by storming the principal’s residence and setting it ablaze. The house was completely engulfed in flames before emergency services could respond.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into both the alleged financial misconduct by the principal and the students’ retaliatory actions. While no injuries were reported, the incident has drawn widespread attention and concern from education stakeholders and the public.
The state Ministry of Education has promised to look into the matter thoroughly, pledging accountability and justice. Meanwhile, security has been tightened around the school premises to prevent further unrest as the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
