The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, has announced that discussions are underway to transfer the management of the national grid to an Independent System Operator, in accordance with the Electricity Act 2023, to promote better discipline in grid management.

The NERC also reported that the recent collapse of the national grid, which occurred early Saturday, was caused by an explosion at the Jebba transmission station.

As of 1 pm on Saturday, significant progress has been made in restoring power, with supply reinstated in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This marks the third collapse of the national grid in just one week, following similar incidents on Monday and Tuesday during restoration efforts.

In a statement on its official X handle, the NERC expressed concern over the rising frequency of grid disturbances that have led to major outages, which have hindered progress in reducing infrastructure deficits and improving grid stability.

The statement noted, “The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission acknowledges the concerning increase in grid disturbances often resulting in significant outages in several states, thereby reversing many of the recent gains achieved in improving infrastructure and grid stability.”

The statement continued, “Preliminary reports indicate that the outage this morning was triggered by the explosion of a current transformer at the Jebba transmission station at 08:15 hours, leading to a cascade of power plant shutdowns due to the loss of load. However, restoration efforts have advanced significantly, with power restored in 33 states and the FCT by 13:00 hours.”

The NERC also announced plans to hold an investigative public hearing to identify the immediate and underlying causes of the recurring grid disturbances and widespread outages.

“In line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, the unbundling of the System Operator function from the Transmission Company of Nigeria Plc is ongoing, with the expectation that an Independent System Operator will enhance discipline in grid management and optimize infrastructure investment,” it added.

The date and venue for the public hearing will be announced soon in national dailies, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate.
