The family, friends, and associates of Abuja trader Onyebuchi Anene mourn his tragic death at the hands of a police officer. Onyebuchi, known as Onyi, was fatally shot near his home in Byazhin Estate, Kubwa, Abuja, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, around 10:30 pm.

Returning from work in the Jabi district, Onyebuchi encountered a dispute with a motorcyclist near his residence’s entrance. Despite resolving the issue, police arrived and insisted on taking both parties to the station. While the motorcyclist left, the police insisted on taking Onyebuchi, leading to a confrontation.

Eyewitnesses reported that as Onyebuchi questioned their motives, a police officer fired a tear gas canister directly at him, fatally injuring him. He was rushed to the National Hospital Abuja but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning, leaving behind his wife and two daughters.
