Mob Lynches and Burns Two Suspected Motorcycle Thieves to Death in Benue
In the late hours of Friday, tragedy struck in the Nyon area, a suburb of Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, as a mob lynched two men suspected of motorcycle theft, ultimately resulting in their deaths. The incident unfolded around midnight, between 12 to 1 am, when an Okada rider, also known as a commercial motorcyclist, raised an alarm while the two suspects were allegedly attempting to rob him of his motorcycle.
According to eyewitnesses, the Okada rider had picked up the two passengers from Katsina Ala street in the High-Level area of Makurdi, with the destination being Nyon. Upon arrival at their supposed destination, the suspects directed the rider into a secluded street, claiming they would pay him upon reaching their destination. However, as it grew later into the night, the Okada rider requested payment to return but was met with resistance from the passengers, who allegedly attempted to snatch his motorcycle.
A witness, identified as Terna, recounted that the situation escalated when the Okada rider refused to hand over his motorcycle key, prompting a struggle between him and the suspects. In a stroke of luck for the rider, he managed to raise an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents, particularly youths in the community.
Driven by a sense of justice and the desire to curb the rising trend of motorcycle theft in the area, the youth swiftly mobilized and apprehended the suspected thieves before they could flee the scene. Overwhelmed by anger and frustration, the mob subjected the suspects to severe beatings, inflicting fatal injuries, before resorting to the ultimate act of vigilante justice by setting them ablaze.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed that the police were informed and had dispatched officers to the community to investigate the matter.
While acknowledging the community’s frustration with rising crime, SP Anene reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged residents to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, instead emphasizing the need to report incidents to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and legal action.
