More than 15 people have reportedly been killed and numerous homes destroyed in a renewed communal conflict between the Mbakine and Ojumole communities in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

Sources say the violence erupted over the weekend following a minor disagreement between two youths at a local market, which quickly escalated into a full-blown crisis. The Ojumole community was reportedly worst hit, with several houses razed and heavy casualties recorded.

According to Nigeria News 247, the conflict involves members of the Igede and Tiv ethnic groups, who have coexisted peacefully in the area for over a century.

The incident was confirmed by the Igede National Youth Leader, Andyson Egbodo, who expressed deep sorrow over the destruction and loss of life.

“We are shocked about what happened,” Egbodo said. “The incident occurred in Gwer East, between Ojumole and Mbakine communities. In Akpacha Council Ward, which is an Igede-speaking area, our people have lived peacefully with their Tiv neighbors for more than 100 years. What happened was completely uncalled for.”

He noted that the violence began on Friday and continued into Saturday, leaving the entire Ojumole community devastated.

“Fifteen people were killed, including women and children. The destruction was massive,” Egbodo added.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, for official confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls to her mobile line went unanswered.
