Wike vs Military officer Yerima

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has voiced concern over a recent public exchange between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a uniformed military officer.

The incident, which took place during a land enforcement exercise in Abuja, was widely circulated in a video that has sparked public debate over decorum, institutional respect, and professional conduct in public service.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, CHRICED emphasized that interactions between civilian authorities and security personnel should reflect mutual respect and adherence to established protocols.

“Public officials, in particular, bear a higher responsibility to model restraint, dignity, and respect for institutions, especially in sensitive situations involving security personnel,” the organization said.

CHRICED noted that public office holders must maintain conduct that promotes harmony and confidence in national institutions, stressing that the military, as a disciplined structure, deserves engagement that reinforces professionalism rather than escalating tensions.

While acknowledging that disagreements may arise in the line of duty, CHRICED urged that such issues be managed through appropriate channels and established procedures. “Situations that appear confrontational risk undermining public trust and could send troubling signals at a time when national unity and institutional stability remain critical,” the statement added.

The organization called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the matter and ensure that all parties are held to the standards expected of their offices. CHRICED urged measures to strengthen accountability, civil–military relations, and uphold democratic governance.

“Ensuring clarity of roles, respect for due process, and adherence to institutional norms is essential for preventing similar incidents in the future,” it said. The group also encouraged the National Assembly, civil society organizations, and the public to continue promoting a culture of accountability, noting, “Nigeria deserves leaders and institutions that embody professionalism, responsibility, and commitment to national interest.”
