FCT, Off-Cycle Governorship Polls a Critical Test for New INEC Chairman, Amupitan – Yiaga Africa
Civil society group Yiaga Africa has weighed in on the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying he has a challenging road ahead with several elections on the horizon.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, the organization’s Executive Director, Samson Itodo, noted that the timing of the appointment leaves little room for delays.
“There’s really no time,” Itodo said. “The entire transition process needs to wrap up quickly because there are key elections coming up soon.”
His comments come less than 24 hours after the nomination of Prof. Amupitan to replace former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
Reflecting on the nominee’s credentials, Itodo acknowledged Amupitan’s professional qualifications and personal integrity.
“He was actually one of my lecturers back in university,” Itodo shared. “Yes, he’s accomplished and has a strong pedigree, but leading INEC requires more than that. It requires the courage to withstand political pressure.”
Itodo stressed that beyond the chairman’s personal capacity, the broader INEC team will play a vital role in ensuring credible elections.
“If he’s confirmed by the Senate, the composition of his team will be critical,” he said. “INEC relies on a wide range of personnel — from Electoral Officers to Resident Electoral Commissioners — and how they function together will determine the commission’s success.”
He concluded by noting that with the FCT and several governorship elections fast approaching, Prof. Amupitan will need to hit the ground running.
