Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have officially ended their strike, which lasted over three months, and are set to resume classes on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The decision was announced by the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday. The union confirmed that the strike was suspended following the payment of the new minimum wage along with five months’ salary arrears to primary school teachers.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the communiqué stated.

The strike, which began in March, had disrupted learning across FCT primary schools. The union said the breakthrough came after the Minister of the FCT intervened, facilitating high-level engagements with relevant stakeholders.

As part of the agreement, the government released ₦16 billion from the Area Councils’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to pay outstanding wages and a portion of the arrears owed to teachers.

The NUT also disclosed that within two weeks, a special committee would be set up to reconcile remaining entitlements and establish a long-term funding plan to avoid future salary delays.

However, the union warned that the strike would be reinstated immediately if the government fails to fulfill its obligations.

The NUT expressed appreciation to teachers for their endurance during the strike and extended gratitude to traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders who supported their cause.
