Nigerian Army Unites Fulani and Tiv Communities to Sign ‘Peace Accord’ in Taraba State
The Nigerian Army has successfully facilitated a “peace accord” between the Fulani and Tiv community leaders in Gassol Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State, as part of its non-kinetic approach to resolving conflicts.
According to SaharaReporters, the peace dialogue took place on Monday, June 23, at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo, Taraba State. The meeting was organized by Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), amid rising tensions and longstanding disputes between the two communities.
Brig Gen Uwa convened key stakeholders, including the Chairman of Gassol LGA, Honorable Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, community elders, and security officials, to forge a sustainable path toward peace and coexistence.
In his address, General Uwa condemned the ongoing cycle of violence and warned against individuals taking the law into their own hands. He reminded attendees that only the state has the constitutional authority to administer justice and urged the communities to become advocates of peace and development.
“No society can thrive in the absence of peace,” he said. “Security, economic growth, and prosperity are achievable only in a united and respectful environment.”
General Uwa also commended Chairman Usman for his leadership in mobilizing stakeholders for the dialogue and called on all parties to remain committed to the peace process and support security agencies with actionable intelligence.
Following hours of discussions, representatives from both the Fulani and Tiv communities agreed to keep open lines of communication, refrain from protecting criminal elements, and collaborate with authorities to prevent further conflicts.
The meeting concluded with the formal signing of a peace accord by all participants.
Chairman Abubakar Usman, speaking on behalf of the communities, praised the Nigerian Army for its commitment to peacebuilding, particularly the efforts of troops under the 6 Brigade. He described the initiative as a crucial milestone in fostering harmony in Gassol LGA.
The Army emphasized that this peace agreement represents a major success for its non-kinetic strategy, which prioritizes dialogue and community engagement over military action in resolving internal conflicts.
