Oba Rashidi Ladoja Adorned with Akoko Leaves as He Ascends as 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland
In a deeply symbolic and culturally rich ceremony, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was on Thursday officially recognized as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the traditional Akoko leaf decoration by the Oluwo Afobaje of Labosinde.
The event took place at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, where Oba Ladoja was adorned with Akoko leaves — a revered emblem of legitimacy and royal authority in Ibadan’s chieftaincy system. The decoration followed the ritual opening of the clash, a crucial ancestral rite that precedes formal enthronement.
Immediately after receiving the Akoko leaf, Oba Ladoja proceeded to the Osemeji shrine, located directly opposite the Labosinde Compound, where further spiritual and cultural rites were carried out in accordance with Ibadan’s age-old traditions.
Arriving in grand fashion, the monarch was transported in a white limousine, accompanied by members of the Olubadan-in-Council, notable Ibadan war chiefs (Oloroso), as well as his immediate and extended family members.
The ceremony marks a critical milestone in the transition process following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025.
Oba Ladoja is expected to receive the official staff and instruments of office from Governor Seyi Makinde at a state-sponsored ceremony scheduled later today at Mapo Hall.
