Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu was formally inaugurated as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) on Monday, August 18, 2025, in Benin City. She made history as the first female and first dentist to hold the position in the 52-year-old institution.

In her inaugural speech, Prof. Ize-Iyamu said her appointment sends a powerful message to every Nigerian girl: “There are no ceilings too high, no doors too heavy, and no dreams too distant when you strive to excel.” She pledged to mentor and empower women in healthcare leadership and promised to open doors wider for future female leaders.

Her leadership vision, summarized as “UBTH CARES,” stands for Care, Advancement, Revitalisation, Employee Welfare, and Sustainability. She vowed to foster compassion, innovation, and excellence in healthcare delivery while improving infrastructure and staff welfare.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate for their confidence, pledging full commitment to the national “Renewed Hope” Agenda aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s health sector.
