Troops Deployed to Farms to Address Food Inflation – DHQs
The Defence Headquarters has announced the deployment of troops to support farmers across Northern Nigeria, particularly in the North West and North Central regions, to ensure a smooth farming season and address food insecurity and inflation.
Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement on Wednesday. He stated that the troop deployment is aimed at providing security to farmers and facilitating their access to farms during the rainy season.
“The deployment has significantly improved farmers’ access to their fields, ensuring a smooth planting season and fostering conditions for a successful harvest,” Buba said.
The move comes alongside similar efforts by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who has initiated farm patrols in the North East to reassure farmers and restore confidence in agricultural activities.
Kabir Ibrahim, Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, confirmed that the increased security presence is already benefiting farmers across the country. This development follows a troubling period of attacks and kidnappings by bandits and terrorists, which has led to significant loss of life and property.
Reports indicate that farmers in the North have paid millions in levies to bandits, contributing to rising food prices, with food inflation hitting 40.87% according to June data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
