Why US colleges are attracting Nigerian students – US Embassy

The United States Embassy has clarified why over 28 American colleges are actively recruiting Nigerian students.

According to the Embassy, this initiative aims to strengthen US-Nigeria relations and promote economic growth in both countries.

Brian Neubert, Public Diplomacy Officer at the US Embassy, made these remarks during the 2025 EduUSA Fair held in Abuja on Monday.

Neubert expressed the US government’s enthusiasm over the thousands of Nigerian students studying in the United States.

“While Nigeria has many exceptional schools, including universities, for decades we have seen thousands of Nigerians seize opportunities abroad and return home to contribute to Nigeria’s development,” he said.

“This is essentially an export for the United States, where Nigerian students come to US campuses and pay tuition,” he explained.

He added, “The United States is proud to partner with Nigeria in empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers.”

Neubert concluded by wishing attendees a successful and inspiring experience at the fair.

NIGERIA NEWS 247 reports that the event, themed ‘Empowering Future, Discover American Excellency in Education and Innovation,’ attracted thousands of Nigerian students.

Data from the US Embassy and the 2024 Open Doors Report revealed that Nigeria ranked seventh globally, with 20,029 Nigerian students enrolled in US colleges and universities during the 2023/2024 academic year.
