The newly formed Adamawa Progressive Elders Council (APEC), an advisory body within the All Progressives Congress (APC), has unveiled plans to unify the party and resolve internal disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the council’s spokesman, Ahmed Sajoh, the initiative is aimed at preventing the seasonal internal conflicts that undermined the party in the 2019 and 2023 elections. Sajoh, a former commissioner of information under an APC government, explained at a press conference in Yola that the elders council was established following consultations with senior APC figures at the national level to stabilize the party at the state level.

The council’s platform includes former governors, former senators, serving and former ministers, veteran party leaders, and respected community elders across Adamawa State’s 21 local government areas. Sajoh emphasized that the elders’ council is intended to serve as a stabilizing force, ensuring that the party avoids the internal disarray that contributed to its losses in the past two governorship elections.

Reflecting on previous setbacks, Sajoh said, “We broke away and fought ourselves,” noting that the absence of a strong conflict-resolution mechanism led to fragmentation after primaries, costing the party key positions.

He added that the council has adopted a 12-point resolution, which includes commitments to produce credible candidates through transparent processes, guarantee free and fair congresses, and promptly resolve disputes arising from primaries.

“The council also pledged to build effective grassroots campaign structures capable of strengthening the party’s electoral outreach,” Sajoh concluded.
