Benue gov sacks electoral commission chairman

Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, the Governor of Benue State, has sanctioned the dismissal of Dr. John Chem from his position as chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission.

This decision follows a recommendation for his removal by the state House of Assembly on Wednesday, where members criticized his judgment.

A statement released by Kula Tersoo, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, and shared with reporters in Makurdi on Friday confirmed that the governor has endorsed this resolution.

In a series of points, the Assembly criticized the BSIEC chairman for his poor judgment in making decisions that would resonate with the majority of stakeholders.

Additionally, they stated that his conduct during his tenure has not aligned with public interest. Governor Alia has acknowledged these resolutions and instructed the Chairman of the commission to promptly transfer responsibilities to the commission’s administrative secretary.
