2026 WCQ playoff: Nigeria’s Super Eagles Thrash Gabon 4–1 to Reach World Cup Playoff Final
Nigeria’s Super Eagles cruised past Gabon with a commanding 4–1 victory in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers playoff semi-final on Thursday evening.
The Eagles booked their place in the mini-tournament after finishing among the best runners-up in the main qualifying series. Eric Chelle’s side had ended behind South Africa, who secured the automatic qualification spot from Group C.
Nigeria started strongly against the Panthers, dominating possession and creating several chances but were unable to find an early breakthrough. The team also escaped a scare when VAR reviewed a potential penalty for Bright Osayi-Samuel’s shirt pull, but the referee opted against awarding a spot-kick.
Adams Akor finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball to slot home into an empty net. However, Gabon equalized ten minutes later through Mario Lemina, whose deflected strike beat goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
In extra time, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with a composed finish from Wilfred Ndidi’s pass, before Victor Osimhen sealed the win with two quick goals to complete a brace.
The Super Eagles will now face the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon in the playoff final, with the victor earning the right to represent Africa at the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026.
