The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo are set to face off for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after both teams secured dramatic victories in Rabat to reach the final of the African playoff series.

DR Congo sealed their spot by defeating Cameroon 1–0 in a tense encounter at the Stade El Barid. The match appeared destined for extra time until Chancel Mbemba delivered a composed finish in stoppage time. The Leopards’ captain lost his marker and calmly steered in Brian Cipenga’s corner, stunning the Cameroonian bench and eliminating the five-time African champions.

The loss confirms that Cameroon—Africa’s most frequent World Cup participant—will miss out on the expanded 48-team tournament next year. Their qualification hopes had already dimmed after surrendering the automatic ticket to Cape Verde, who are set to make their first-ever appearance at the global showpiece.

Earlier, Nigeria advanced to the playoff final with a commanding 4–1 victory over Gabon at the Moulay Hassan Stadium. The Super Eagles appeared to be cruising when Akor Adams scored in the 78th minute, but Mario Lemina equalised for Gabon through a deflected effort just before full-time.

Nigeria, however, quickly regained control. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in extra time with his first goal for the national team, before Victor Osimhen struck twice to seal a comprehensive win and confirm the Super Eagles’ place in the final.

Both teams now shift focus to Sunday’s decisive match in Morocco. The winner will progress to a six-team intercontinental playoff in Mexico in March 2026, where the final two qualifying berths for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be determined.
