BREAKING: Sébastien Lecornu resigns as French Prime Minister
France’s Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, has resigned, just hours after unveiling his new cabinet, the Elysée Palace confirmed on Monday.
The surprise resignation followed a one-hour meeting between Lecornu and President Emmanuel Macron, marking the abrupt end of a tenure that lasted less than a month.
Lecornu, who was appointed to replace François Bayrou, faced swift backlash over the makeup of his cabinet. Critics in the National Assembly argued that the new government was largely a continuation of Bayrou’s administration and threatened to reject it.
The mounting opposition from multiple political parties put pressure on Lecornu’s leadership, ultimately forcing his early exit.
President Macron is now expected to consult with party leaders and announce a new prime ministerial nominee in the coming days as his government grapples with internal dissent and calls for broader reform.
