President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday vowed that France would take every measure to prevent a repeat of the jihadist attacks that struck Paris 10 years ago, killing 130 people.

“Everything will be done to prevent any new attack and to ruthlessly punish those who would dare to attempt it,” Macron said during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the attacks.

The only surviving member of the 10-person jihadist cell, 36-year-old Salah Abdeslam, is serving a life sentence. The other nine attackers either blew themselves up or were killed by police in the attacks claimed by the Islamic State (IS).

Macron highlighted that while the IS proto-state in Syria and Iraq was defeated by US-backed forces in 2019, jihadism has evolved. He warned of an “internal, insidious, less detectable, less predictable” threat within France.

“No one can guarantee the end of attacks, but we can guarantee that for those who take up arms against France, the response will be uncompromising,” Macron added.

He emphasized that France will continue to monitor jihadist networks both domestically and abroad. Over the past decade, French authorities have foiled 85 attacks, including six this year alone.

The anniversary ceremony in Paris brought together victims’ associations, Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and President Macron at the “Jardin du 13 novembre 2015,” paying tribute to the lives lost in the tragedy.
