Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has called on the Nigerian government to prosecute those responsible for attacks on Christians and to strengthen security in vulnerable communities.

In a statement issued on Friday, Meloni condemned the recent violence, stressing that religious freedom is an inalienable human right. “We strongly condemn the renewed violence against Christian communities in Nigeria today. Religious freedom is an inalienable right: we call on the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious communities and prosecute those responsible for this heinous attack,” she said.

Meloni also expressed solidarity with victims and communities in Nigeria who feel threatened due to their faith.

Her remarks come amid a surge in attacks on Christians across Nigeria. On Tuesday evening, gunmen targeted a church in Eruku, Kwara State, killing two people and abducting the pastor along with several worshippers. This attack followed the abduction of 25 girls from a boarding school in Kebbi State.

The situation has drawn international scrutiny, including threats of military action from US President Donald Trump over the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
