FCT Minister Wike Mourns Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, Vows Justice
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, describing her killing as both tragic and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister said Maduagwu’s death was not only a devastating loss to Arise News but to the Nigerian media industry and the nation at large.
“I feel pained that such a wonderful soul could be cut down in its prime. It is sad! The death of Somtochukwu is not only a loss to the Arise News family but also to the Nigerian media and the nation as a whole,” Wike stated.
He assured the public that law enforcement agencies have already begun investigations and pledged that no effort would be spared in uncovering the circumstances surrounding her death and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.
“The Police will unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and bring those responsible to justice,” he affirmed.
Confirming the development, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services in the FCT, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, said Maduagwu was brought to Maitama General Hospital already deceased at about 4:30 a.m. on Monday. She added that a preliminary medical report would be submitted to the police to assist in their investigation.
Wike extended his condolences to the management and staff of Arise News, particularly its Chairman, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, as well as to the family and friends of the late journalist.
“It is my prayer that God in His infinite mercies will accept her soul and give her family members, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the minister said.
