Lagos Government Urges Medical Guild to Suspend Planned Strike, Pledges Swift Action on Demands
The Lagos State Government has appealed to the Medical Guild—an association representing doctors in the state’s public service—to suspend its planned strike, assuring that efforts are underway to address their concerns.
In a statement released over the weekend, the government acknowledged the critical role of doctors in the healthcare system and emphasized its commitment to improving their welfare, working conditions, and career progression. It noted that open dialogue between both parties is ongoing, and stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted healthcare services for the public.
“The state government is taking concrete steps to meet the doctors’ demands, including implementing budgetary adjustments and conducting administrative reviews,” officials stated. While reaffirming its respect for workers’ rights to protest, the government cautioned against any action that could disrupt medical services—especially in a period when access to healthcare remains crucial for millions of Lagos residents.
The Medical Guild had earlier issued a strike notice, citing persistent issues such as delayed promotions, poor remuneration, and deteriorating infrastructure in public hospitals. The association claims these issues have remained unaddressed despite repeated engagements.
In response, the state has urged for patience and cooperation, highlighting ongoing reforms within the health sector aimed at delivering lasting improvements. Stakeholders remain hopeful that the continued dialogue will avert a full-scale industrial action that could severely impact healthcare delivery across Lagos.
