Former Senate President Ahmed Lawan has urged Nigerians to accord the country’s armed forces the highest level of respect, following the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, Lawan praised the military for its dedication and sacrifices in protecting the nation.

“Let me commend our armed forces and other security agencies for doing so much for us—for protecting our lives and property,” he said. “They deserve our respect. They deserve our support at all times. This administration is committing significant resources to the armed forces and security agencies, and we must ensure those investments yield results.”

He stressed that Nigerians of all backgrounds must acknowledge the selflessness and commitment of the military.

“But Nigerians, regardless of our status, must respect our armed forces,” Lawan added. “I have worked closely with them. They are doing a very good job. We need to give them a pat on the back and continue to support them.”

Lawan’s comments come amid widespread discussion surrounding a heated exchange between FCT Minister Wike and a naval officer over a disputed plot of land in Abuja’s Gaduwa District.

A viral video showed Wike confronting military personnel stationed at the site, which is reportedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff. FCT officials had gone to stop what they described as unauthorized construction but were allegedly prevented from entering the premises by armed soldiers. Wike later arrived and accused the officers of overstepping their authority.

Wike Defends His Actions

Addressing the altercation on Thursday, Wike said he intervened because senior FCT officials were assaulted during a lawful enforcement operation. He criticized the retired naval officer involved, describing the deployment of soldiers to the site as “an abuse of authority.”

“How can I sit as a minister when government officials at the level of directors are being attacked and beaten up? Should I just sit in my office doing nothing?” he asked.

Wike insisted that no one should use security personnel for personal advantage, adding that the disputed land had no valid allocation in the FCT’s records.

“It’s really unfortunate. I don’t understand how someone who reached such a high position cannot simply come to my office if there is a problem. Using military status to intimidate Nigerians is unacceptable. I am not one of those who will succumb to blackmail,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reacted to the incident, saying any officer performing a “lawful duty” will be protected. He added that the Defence Headquarters is reviewing the matter to ensure it is properly resolved and to prevent future conflicts between civilian authorities and the military.
